Details:
This Commodoor is single-chip calculator equipped with an IC marked only wih 8I on the visible side .
(To avoid any risk of damaging the LCD-contacts with the PCB, I didn’t take the PCB off.)
In 1980 Büromaschinen Lexikon mentions the Ibico 052 with a price tag of DM 39.=. This calculator looks very similar to the Commodoor.
Looking for brand relations I saw that a company named Acco owns many brands, Ibico being one of them (**). It is not a proof of the Ibico being the same calculator as the Commodoor, but it does add to the probability.
In the Netherlands this Commodoor marked calculator was also sold under the brand name Accona mentioning “100 % Commodoor warranty”. My Commodoor was sold by Zurel, in the 70’s and 80’s a trading company selling watches and small electronic devices under several different brand names.
It is remarkable to see the 11-year price drop of relatively simple electronic calculators like the Canon Pocketronic (Fl. 1600.= In 1972) and this Commodoor. It’s clear, electronics have conquered the world.
(*) A Dutch advert of October 1982 shows the Accona priced at Fl. 13.=.
In March 1983 the same calculator is shown with a price of Fl. 9.95 and a suggested retail price of Fl. 35.=
