Most rechargeable batteries don’t survive decades.  The batteries in this QT8B were no exception.  They were not leaking, but the capacity was zero. The photo shows the original batteries.  I replaced them by 6 NiMh (GP-RecyKo) AA cells with a capacity of 2000mAh.

No further action was required.  The calculator worked as it should.
